Self-care can take the form of doing nice things for yourself such as a massage, a walk in nature, making time for meditation, journaling, and taking a bubble bath. Those self-care methods are the kind that are talked about most often and are excellent self-care methods. They can be soothing to your body and mind.
Another type of self-care that is equally if not more important is accepting your imperfections. Really radically accepting them. Whether you are judging yourself or others, your mind's pull is usually to perfection. Your mind has likely been programmed that way. Therefore, it is important to be aware of this and remember that self-care is recognizing and remembering that you are on a life journey of progress, not perfection. Be gentle with yourself and add a dose of compassion.
Your mind responds to the words you say to yourself and the pictures you make in your mind. So be mindful to say kind words to yourself that are encouraging. Be purposeful with your intentions and tell yourself daily how much you approve of yourself. You can simply start by saying “I accept and approve of myself”. It may seem odd at first, yet over time it becomes more familiar, and it can even feel good. Self-acceptance and self-approval are forms of self-care on an optimal healing level.
